Related tags

So whats up with tags having relations between them. Why is that a good thing? Connections between topics provides semantics by enabling a context. Without a context you can't say anything about a subject. Folksonomy tags much used on many sites today have no explicit context. The context is decided by the individual and this makes sharing less efficient. Although serendipedous discovery is supported it provides little help in learning and esablishing a shared vocabulary that can help communication and provide a means for dialog and sharing of knowledge. With the Topic Maps standard the Tags structure becomes a digital conceptual graph that can be tapped by both humans and machines.
